Gibson SG Special Faded Electric Guitar (with Gig Bag)

Faded Gibson SG Special

The Gibson Faded SG Special definitely has one of the best combinations of value and features of any electric guitar in Gibson’s entire line-up.  Especially when you consider that this guitar is a genuine American made Gibson SG that sells for just under $700.  Gibson’s MSRP for this guitar is quoted at $1,164.  (Just for anyone who doesn’t know, MSRP is the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price — Actual prices are almost always lower than this, but 40% off for this guitar is a really good discount).

Hats off to Gibson U.S.A. for giving us the option of getting our hands on an authentic solid mahogany electric guitar at a budget price.  But make no mistake about it though — this guitar still rocks !!!   It has the same pedigree as the Gibson SG played by these famous players: Pete Townsend, Frank Zappa, Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton (back in the days with Cream), as well as many othe great electric guitar players.

The “Worn” finish (available in either Brown or Cherry) gives the feel of playing a guitar that has been around for a while.. And it’s not just the looks that impress.  Gibson’s use of it’s time tested hardware package ensures that this electric guitar is still more than capable of putting out that famous Gibson SG attitude.  I can’t imagine finding a better over-all value in a genuine “Made in U.S.A.” electric guitar.

SG – Best Selling Gibson Of All Time

Gibson U.S.A. shipped their first electric guitar in 1936.  When you consider the huge number of Gibson electric guitars that must have been sold over the past 75 years, it is quite a testament to the Gibson SG that it has sold more than any other Gibson line.

If this guitar wasn’t capable of expressing the musical creativity of a really wide variety of performing artists, it would have dissapeared from the market ages ago.  But it’s still here — and still going strong !!!

So Where Did Gibson Cut Corners?

If you were going to upgrade from the Gibson Faded SG Special you would probably want to move up to the Gibson SG Standard.  That would cost you around $4oo. more for basically the same guitar.  One thing you would get for the extra money is a Gibson hard-shell case (actual value of $200).  (The faded ships with a “deluxe” gig bag instead).

The next major difference is in the finish.  The finish on the faded is basically an easily applied stain process as opposed to a multi-step, as in time consuming and more costly, higher end finish.  (I worked as a furniture finisher for many years and I can tell you that this is not just marketing hype from Gibson – quality definitely costs more money in the wood finishing department).

Another way they cut costs with the Gibson Faded SG is that they use those small round fret inlay dots as opposed to the large trapezoids you will find on the Gibson SG Special.
